Unless you’ve been living under a rock you know about the harsh realities of fast fashion- the impact it has on our environment, the often unsafe working conditions of the people making the clothes, and the poor quality of said clothes. What you may not be sure about is how to move away from fast fashion, that’s where I come in. Take a look at my top tips on how you can end your fast fashion cycle.
1. BREAK THOSE LINKS
- Unsubscribe from their newsletters
- Unfollow them on social media
- Ask them #whomademyclothes | #whatsinmyclothes | #whomademyfabric
2. SHIFT YOUR MINDSET
- Replace those recently unfollowed accounts with ones such as @cleanclothescampaign, @slowfashion.movement and @consciousstyle
- Let go of your “need” to impulse buy
- Educate yourself by watching documentaries such as The True Cost or Made In Bangladesh
3. LOOK AFTER YOUR WARDROBE
- Care for your clothes, repair them when damaged instead of just replacing
- Rewear them- this is especially important for special occasion outfits, you do not need a new outfit for each one, or if you do rent it
- If you’re creative upcycle or even make your own clothes
4. BUY LESS
- Try out a challenge such as #notbuyingnew or the 30 wears challenge
- Buy only what you need and do it purposefully
- Enforce the 30-day rule
5. BUY BETTER
- Swap clothes with friends
- Buy vintage or second-hand
- Buy timeless over trendy
There you have it, those are my top tips to end the fast fashion cycle, if you think I missed anything tweet me and let me know.
